A major Industrial

Independence. Substantial investments were being made to create the
infrastructure and foundation of a manufacturing base. Trained technical
personnel with expert knowledge and being aware of developments within India and
abroad were an essential requirement for rapid industrial growth with self
reliance. In order to foster Development of Welding profession in India, the
members of erstwhile Indian Chapter of The Welding Institute - London took
initiative to form The Indian Institute of Welding, which was Incorporated on
the 22nd April 1966 at Calcutta.
The Institute was promoted by

pipeline, structures for factories, mines, ports, power-stations, railways, etc.
Industries engaged in providing Welding Consumables and Equipment for Oil,
Steel, Cement, Petro-Chemical, Fertiliser and many other were fully involved.
Experts from Research and Development Organisations & Laboratories doing
basic research and application work for critical Welding and Universities /
IIT's with faculties engaged in Welding related Science and Technology are
actively involved with the Institute.
