The IIW Mumbai Branch

FORMATION

Second February 1973 is the red-letter day in the Annals of the Mumbai (then Bombay) Branch of the IIW. It was on that day the branch was formally inaugurated by Mr.W.Burt, the then President of the Indian Institute of Welding.

Since Mumbai has been the centre of commercial and Industrial activities in India, the necessity for the formation of a branch of the Indian Institute of Welding at Mumbai was felt by all connected with the welding profession, ever since the formation of the Indian Institute of Welding with its Head Quarters at Calcutta on 22nd April, 1966.

An informal meeting was held on 20th August 1968, at the Central Labour Institute, Sion, Mumbai. Mr.Keith Hartley & Mr. B.C.Bhar, the then President and Secretary respectively of the Indian Institute of Welding were also present at this meeting. A sizeable gathering of about 120-130 persons, representing entire cross section of industries and institutions connected with welding, attended this meeting.

Late, Mr. I.T.Mirchandani, Managing Director of Advani Oerlikon Electrodes Private Limited, Bombay, stressed on the need for starting a Branch of the Indian Institute of Welding in Mumbai. In his presidential address, Mr. Hartley gave a resume of the activities of the Institute, and stated that it was also the intention of IIW to open new branches in various parts of the country. The members present in the meeting, included S/Shri. L.M.Pasricha, P.S.Visvanath, A.N.Subramanyam, H.D.Govindaraj amongst others.

After the meeting, the IIW members and many interested Industrial Corporate members met a number of times to bring together the welding fraternity under one roof so that the branch could be formed.

Finally in November 1972, in a meeting held at the Indian Oxygen Limited, Mumbai, the following members were nominated for the Bombay Branch Managing Committee. The central council also approved the formation of the branch.

The branch was formally inaugurated on 2nd February1973 by Mr. W.Burt, the then president of the IIW. The inaugural function was held at the Central Labour Institute, Bombay. This was the third branch after Tiruchirapalli and Madras.

In the beginning, the membership of the Mumbai branch came from the Heavy & Light Fabrication Industries, Ship Building & repair shops, Automobile units, Welding Electrode & Equipment Manufacturers and Educational institutions. Over a period, flow of members came from wider segments like ONGC, BARC, Railways, Refinery, Fertilizer units, Certification Agencies, Testing Laboratories Etc. Today the membership of the branch is over 500 consisting of

The branch territory covers the industrially advanced Western region of the country consisting of entire Maharashtra, Goa and southern Gujarat states.

HONOURS

Many illustrious members of the Mumbai branch have been elected to various positions in the Central Council.

S/Shri. I.T.Mirchandani, S.V.Nadkarni, P.S.Visvanath, and J.K.Nanda have been elected as President of the IIW.

S/Shri. I.T.Mirchandani, M.H.Pherwani, S.V.Nadkarni, H.L.Prabhakar, Dr. K.G.Chandiramani, N.K.Sarkar, P.S.Visvanath, J.K.Nanda, B.R.Iyengar, and M.P.Dhanuka have been elected as Vice-President of the Parent body.

Shri. I.T.Mirchandani was elected as Vice-President of the International Institute of Welding from 1977 to 1980.

Shri. S.V.Nadkarni was elected as Chairman of the "Working group for Liaison with Developing Countries" at the Annual Assembly of the International Institute of Welding in 1982.

Shri. S.V.Nadkarni was invited to deliver the L.P.Mishra Memorial Lecture during the National Welding Seminar in 1977. Subsequently, S/Shri. P.S.Visvanath (1981), N.K.Sarkar (1987), and J.K.Nanda (1991) had the honour of delivering the lecture. Shri. M.P.Dhanuka was invited to deliver the Keith Hartley Memorial Lecture in 1994.

Many members of the Mumbai branch have received prestigious Awards for the technical papers presented by them during the National Welding Seminars.

Shri. S.V.Nadkarni was felicitated and a Citation & Silver Plaque were presented to him during the NWS-1990

ACTIVITIES

The Mumbai Branch had hosted the National Welding Seminar in 1976, 1981 and 1990. The National Welding Meet was hosted in 1982 and 1998. The International Welding Conference (IWC-1996) and an Exhibition on Welding and Cutting Equipments was organised at Mumbai in December 1996. Apart from these, the branch also conducted Annual Welding Seminars (AWS) on topics of current interest every year.

Apart from these, the branch is conducting Refresher Courses, Workshops, and Training Programs for the benefit of Welders, Welding Supervisors, Inspectors and Engineers. Many of these programs are conducted outside of Mumbai, at Pune, Baroda, Walchandnagar, Ahmednagar, Bhavnagar, Nashik, and Goa.

Mumbai branch had organised Plant Visits to Maharashtra Gas Cracker Complex at Nagothane, Vikram Ispat at Raigad, Walchandnagar Industries at Walchandnagar, Jaihind Sciaky and Thermax at Pune, Godrej and BARC at Mumbai, Railway Engineering Workshops at Kalyan and Sabarmathi. Technical Lectures by prominent speakers are conducted on variety of topics every month.

The Mumbai branch was the first among the IIW branches to put-up a website for the benefit of its members.

The Mumbai branch members can indeed feel proud of its achievements and service to the Welding Fraternity over the past 27 years without any break. The credit for the success goes to the untiring efforts and sacrifice of the past and present office bearers and the whole hearted support from members.
